Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT is a technical university in Cambridge. Academic preparation and the complete application matter; an English test serves a separate purpose.

QS 2026 · worldwide #1

Checked: . Conditions depend on programme, qualification and intake.

After school in Kazakhstan

International applications are read in the context of the school system. Prepare school results and translations; do not assume SAT replaces a school qualification.

Admission tests

SAT or ACT is required. There is no score that guarantees admission. Middle 50% of Class of 2029 admits: SAT Math 780–800, ERW 740–780. These section ranges are not minimums and must not be summed into an admission cutoff.

Language and proficiency

MIT strongly recommends English testing for applicants using English for fewer than five years or not speaking it at home/school. TOEFL from 21 January 2026: minimum 5, recommended 5.5 (1–6); earlier tests: 90/100 (0–120). IELTS: minimum 7, recommended 7.5. These are not SAT cutoffs or admission guarantees.

Selection statistics

Class of 2029: 1,334 admitted from 29,281 applicants; published overall rate 4.6%. International category: 136 of 6,926. These are historical group statistics, not an individual probability or Kazakhstan-specific rate.

An overall admission rate is not your personal probability. No exam score guarantees admission.

Tuition and full budget

Tuition for 2026/27: USD 66,720 per academic year. Account separately for housing, meals, insurance and personal expenses; see Student Financial Services for the full budget.

Funding and obligations

Financial aid depends on demonstrated need rather than an automatic SAT award. International applicants must submit financial documentation under MIT rules.

Preparation and application route

1. Choose a Massachusetts Institute of Technology programme and confirm that your qualification is eligible. 2. Check subject and language requirements in the official source. 3. Prepare translated school documents and the required results. 4. Work out the full budget and check any separate funding application before submitting. 5. Apply under your intake rules, then check offer conditions and visa requirements.

Illustrative example — hypothetical scenario

Hypothetical scenario: a school student in Kazakhstan considers engineering at MIT. They compare SAT Math and ERW with admitted-student statistics without adding range endpoints into a cutoff. They use the 1–6 scale for a new TOEFL, then prepare school records and family financial documents. A backup budget is needed until aid is confirmed. No offer or scholarship is assumed.
